Hurricane Matthew and shipping

How do big ships deal with events like Hurricane Matthew? Go around it, through it, wait somewhere calm? I assume passenger jets are too high to be worried.

I reckon passenger jets even at high altitude will be keeping well clear.

Always aim southwest of the storm is the general idea. Weather forecasting is so good these days that they have plenty of notice to alter course to be hundreds of miles away from danger (unless they make a silly decision).
