After serving on HMS Beaver I can assure you that the name was a very proud one - not to mention the fact that wearing your uniform with "HMS Beaver" on the cap tally, whilst ashore in the USA was a great ice-breaker at parties!!!!

It's a great name (that will have the Russian fleet scurrying home to safety) but doesn't seem right on a submarine. Then again as we have no battleships it wouldn't seem right on a titchy frigate either.

HMS Dreadnought never left, it's still at Rosyth. The previous one at least.



Usual Navy thing is to rename the decommissioned ship, it's looking rough they could call it HMS Sturgeon.

Presumably they will have managed to chop up the previous Dreadnought before the bit where Queeny breaks the bottle over the new one? Otherwise there will be a singularity or something.

Presumably on decommissioning it ceases to be formally known as HMS Dreadnought, so there's no issue with the new one being commissioned in that name? I don't know, but had taken it as being implicit. It's no longer a serving naval vessel - just held pending somewhere being found to dispose of the glowing bits....

The significance of Dreadnought as a name is that it spawned a new class of surface vessel, the dreadnoughts, in 1905.

It has the same significance for nuclear-powered submarines; Dreadnought was the first RN SSN.
