Taking off towards the West and heading for the US last time we overflow a couple of large airfields with airliners/biz jets parked along taxiways. Some looked liked maintenance bases.

Can anyone shed a light please - just curious

No I don't think so they were on the right hand side going West not near the coast. Our heading was towards Southern Ireland I think.

Very shortly after takeoff could have been Dunsfold

A bit later maybe Farnborough

Then probably Kemble.

You overfly Dunsfold very soon after departure if you fly runway heading. It's where the car show made famous by Chris Evans is filmed.

ETA: I missed that that's already been said.

Yep, Dunsfold or Farnborough most likely or Blackbushe is another possibility.

You won't see any airliners at Blackbushe. There are a couple of smaller biz jets based there though.

Immediately after take off could have been Gatwick Aviation museum http://www.gatwick-aviation-museum.co.uk/# more into the distance could have been Brize Norton, there would be loads of airliner type planes there.

I'm betting it's Farnborough anyway.

My money's on Lasham. Maintenance base in the past for Dan Air, think they're called ATC Lasham now. Used to work there and regularly saw planes off to the south coming past.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Gatwick+Airport+...

I know the planes don't follow roads, but you can see Lasham is due east of LGW so my money's on that. In fact if you zoom in to street view, you'll see some airliners there.

Depending on how far out of Gatwick you were, could they be Fairford and Brize Norton?

Brize in particular has plenty of transport types.

Oh God, please accept my apologies everyone. One throwaway tongue-in-cheek mention of his name and someone is raking over all that st again.

Do you know how long after getting airborne these places were overflown? Might help. There are standard departure routes, but often tactical headings will be used which means a lot more places are possible.

Depends where you were going also.

Going transatlantic from LGW, I've never been past Brize. 99/100 you're routed to Southampton then anywhere between Lands End and Southern Wales for your crossing.

I've certainly seen Dunsfold over the years, and with a squint, you might catch Farnborough and Blackbush if you know where you're looking.

Northern routes out of LGW are sequenced to make a 180' turn (from the Westerly runway) and are routed to the east of London, although occasionally if it's quiet you can get vectored over the top of the city.
