USS Zumwalt goes phut phut scrape in Panama Canal

Apparently the USA's stealth ship DDG-1000 has broken down again, this time in the Panama Canal a couple of days ago. It's reported to have suffered an "engineering casualty" that meant it collided with the canal's walls and required a tow to nearby former base for repairs.

There's some absolute crap given as reasons for things occurring these days. Engineering casualty - what an engineer fell into something? Why not just say mechanical failure, regardless, in this instance, of cause?

I expect Star Trek to have engineering casualties - more butchering of the language.

On another note, if the technology is so new and likely to fail, wouldn't you build a smaller vessel with the same 'new' technology on it first. Not launch the US's largest destroyer and then have this happen?

They did, they started building small stealth ships and other test vessels for the tech on this hull in the 80s...

New ship, first of class, there will always teathing problems. Never commissioned a new one without at leat one machinery breakdown that leaves you (temporarily) dead in the water. They were unlucky it happened close to something to drift into.

This was in the news a week or 2 ago surprised it wasn't picked up sooner by the press.

This is the second break down, the first being at the end of September which took a couple of weeks to fix. Ultimately similar symptoms back then (lack of progress) but the cause was reported as being a seawater leak in the ship's auxiliary motor drive oil system. After being nailed back together it sailed into Mayport in late October declaring "unspecified engineering trouble".

USN warships in the canal do get uppity - the other day I waved at one and in return it pointed what looked like a .50 cal machine gun at me.

This is the one I saw. Passed it in the canal. The machine gun (manned, aimed, in our direction, we were the only boat nearby) was mounted at a door in the side.

I would've been straight on the blower requesting in no uncertain terms that they pointed it elsewhere.

The Zumwalt jobbie had a breakdown last month iirc, some oil & water came together somehow....
To be expected I suppose with such a new design....

Possibly not but it would've made me feel better, pointing guns at people isn't nice and unless Ayahuasca was steering a small dhow straight at 'em whilst wearing a beard & looking foreign, really rather rude.

Pretty crap quality control by Bath Ironworks; it's not the whizzo Carlos Fandango propulsion that's caused the problem, it's a boring old heat exchanger with a leak in it allowing the oggin to mix with oil.
