Bought a boat...

In perhaps not a very intelligent move, I bought a boat this afternoon.

A canal runs past my house (the Shropshire union canal) - can I just drop it in and pootle about under 4mph? Don't know much about canal regs.

The sea also isn't too far... with a decent outboard would it drag a waterskier?


Done a fair bit of sailing so only a stranger to knackered old speedboats, not the water.

Or put a massive v8 in it and turn it into a jet boat.

You would need something between 30-50HP for that boat to pull a 'standard' waterskier I would say. Anything bigger than about 40HP you might want to change the steering to a 'Morse' type.

To use that on the Shroppie you'll need to get a license from the Canal and Rivers Trust. As long as the outboard is self-contained without a separate fuel tank that should be reasonably straightforward, but I suspect you will still need a Boat Safety Certificate to check the steering gear is OK.

I think the biggest outboard with an internal fuel tank is about 6hp. I bought a new Mariner 6 earlier this year with one but pretty sure that was it before needing an external supply.
