Powerhouse of the North leads the way again with Driver Only operating trains...

ETA - I kind of get why they could not go without a guard - but is the driver really that forbidden that he cannot open the guards panel to push the door open button, rather than have passengers climb through the cab...

Also.... Why not a) put the bloody guard int a cab to catch the train... or b) instead of waiting an hour - run back to fetch him....

Having worked this route for a fair few years I've can have a good guess at what's happened, but I'm not going to speculate on a public forum.

Why the Driver couldn't operate the doors? It needs traction specific key that we were never issued with whilst I was there

Last time I looked there wasn't a provision in the Rule Book to make a wrong direction move to go and fetch a misplaced guard! Or indeed passing a signal at danger inorder to deliver an errant guard :-)

It's a bit easier though when they're ballast trains and you don't need to worry about any punters laugh

It's really frustrating that drivers can't at least open the doors on the 333s that run on my local line (Airedale). It always seems to take the guard ages to get to the place where they need to be to open the doors. I'm all for guards being the only ones who could close them, but if drivers had a "door open" button in the cab it would save a lot of time for passengers standing around on the platform after the train has stopped. Makes me wonder if this is the main reason that these trains are perpetually a few minutes late.

I've been in situations where doors have opened on ballast wagons (at speed smashing quite a few car windscreens while travelling through a station) - you think punters are difficult to control? Try hearding up 30T of ballast wink

Ah sorry I thought you meant train cab oops trains on the brain laugh I think that would have been a non starter as the traffic around there at that time of day is pretty dire (hence why the trains are packed) so it would have taken too long. The line has a pretty intense service so you'd soon have a queue of trains going nowhere fast.

Northern Rail said it was an "operating incident".

Why does everything have to be an incident?

Because it's a specific term. That's different to a problem. hehe
