If you are in the market for a new passenger jet, why would you choose one over the other? Is there the brand loyalty with these two that there often is where (usually) men and machines are involved?

Numerous reasons - price/lease costs, discount, fuel burn, commonality, engine types, cabin fit, size, engineering support.

Most airlines will pitch one against the other in order to get the best deal. There's big discounts for being a launch customer for a new type and / or buying in bulk etc.

I think back in 1989 when the 747-400 came out, its list price was in the region of $120 million, but it's unlikely many airlines paid that per airframe.

From a pilot's perspective....pal is a nylon cadet on an airline scheme down at ctc - majority of pilots he is working with favour the bus over the boeing which really surprised me!

Listening to the Virgin flight crew conversations (moans) everyday on the crew buses going into work, I'd say the majority of them favour Boeing's products over Airbus.
