St.Ives Branch Line, Narrow gauge

Just back from another all to brief holiday break there - jeez I wish I could live there !

Noticed from a bridge the obvious under used narrow gauge as well, does anyone happen to know why its there ?

Been there many times over the years though not in the last 12 years, sadly. Always stayed with friends who live on Hain Walk between St Ives and Carbis Bay. There's a good view of the railway line from the path that winds its way down from Hain Walk to Porthminster beach, but in all the years I've been I never noticed the narrow gauge inner rail line. Maybe it was added since I last went.

I'm not sure if they're common but I have a hazy memory of seeing them on the Settle & Carlisle railway. Might be wrong though.

They're used on slower routes - IIRC you can only use them up to 90mph, but they allow relays to be done more quickly/cheaply.
