Great find. I spent most of my spare time on the roof of Queen's Building around that time with my Dad's naval binoculars and my Ian Allan 'Civil Aircraft Markings' book, cycling in from Hampton about eight miles away.

Lovely stuff. Nice shots of a Pan Am DC-8 and an SAS DC-8.

It would have been nice to see a bit more shots from Gatwick. Interesting seeing the Bristol Freighter (probably BUA) on approach.

There's a great Facebook group for Memories of Gatwick Airport, if you have links to it they will probably let you join. Fascinating seeing so many things from well before my time working there, and even stuff from when I have been working there that I had long forgotten!

My early airport memories all centre around Dublin Airport. My oldest memory (I was probably six or seven years old (which makes it sometime around 1964/65) is watching Aer Lingus Viscounts and a couple of their Carvairs taxying around the apron being viewed from the roof terrace (long since closed) of the A Pier.

This postcard dates from around that time. The A Pier is the building on the right with the black and white chequers. It still exists - as does the classic 1940 designed terminal building.



Not a great picture but it does show how the Carvairs used to park near to A Pier, which is what I remember

I don't think it's nostalgia as I wasn't even born then (I'm 35), but everything just looked cooler back then. The planes, the liveries, even the buses look nice.

With the ever gradual transformation to the 'new look' LHR for the 21st century, not much in that film survives now, other than the runways and the then 'new' multi-story car park!!

Yesterday I was privileged to get a visit up into the top of the LHR control tower.......
Fascinating, but also very cool as 15 years ago I had worked on the design/computer modelling of it when working on the Terminal 5 project.

Thanks for the links Eric. I love that kind of stuff. I'm settled in now with a big mug of tea, packet of Digestives and some youtube flight nostalgia on a Saturday night!

I've been looking for footage of L1011 Tristars out of LHR (specifically Gulf Air) but it seems pretty non existant. Also, there doesn't seem to be much film of the inside of T3 back in the early 80's when they had the huge "flicker board" which updated the flight details. I can still hear the "clacking" sound of it now...
