So anyone know the identity of the moronic boat who energy who, despite receiving instructions that movement of all boats on the Dart was suspended for a period of tine, decided that he or she was too special to adhere to the river rules.

Consequently the Typhoon display was abandoned.

There are lot of very angry organisers around in Dartmouth at the moment so I hope the guilty person makes a swift exit.

It took a lot of persuasion to get permission for a display & one idiot had ruined it.

The stupid thing for me is that a single pleasure boat can stop an aerial display. I suppose there was a 40 bazillion-to-one chance that the aeroplane would crash into the boat and the boater's relatives would sue and demand the pilot go to jail for100 years.

I was there and vaugely heard the Tannoy announcement that the display had to be cancelled because of too many boat(s) on the River Dart in the wrong place.

I saw one Police launch and (at least) one RN open craft and the Harbour Master but with the exception of the latter, they weren't obviously buzzing up and down telling people to move.

Would like to know exactly what went wrong because it was a huge disappointment for thousands of folk.

P.s. There is another display planned for tomorrow PM but will they bother if they don't have the resources to 'police' their own 'safety' plan?

Apparently the Harbour Master spent 3 fruitless hours trying to get people to go ashore.

He failed & the decision was taken by H&S to pull the display.

It's bks however rules are rules & the display was scrubbed.

Pilot was quite pissed off apparently.

Whilst from a personal point of view I would want the display to go ahead I have to look at it from the other viewpoint.

If I have a mooring in the harbour/estuary, have no interest in a flying display & want to spend the weekend on my boat why should I go ashore? Were the boat owners offered accommodation/food & drink/facilities ashore or just expected wander off somewhere in what would have been a quite crowded town?

A whole event cancelled for a single craft, doesn't the Typhoon have air to ground capability? Surely a few rounds across the bow would persuade them to leave.

Surely it's no different to closing a road for a special event? Yes it's an inconvenience but it's temporary and for the benefit of many. Thousands of people disappointed and a significant amount of money wasted because of a few selfish individuals. I've no interest in running a marathon but I'm not going to wander around the course of one disrupting it just because I feel I should be able to.

It's going to be very interesting at Bournemouth next weekend, there's usually loads of people on boats effectively under the display line, we're going down there I hope they don't force more displays to be cancelled.

The original Severn Bridge, the M48 between Jct 1 and Jct 2 was closed this morning for a half marathon. That's a pretty busy commercial traffic route closed for some joggers to wander around for a bit. It caused a lot of problems too, due to lane 3 of the new crossing being closed "for barrier repairs due to an earlier accident". Thousands, maybe tens of thousands on a warm summer Sunday, inconvenienced but it's a pretty rare event, and only for a few hours with clear warnings of the closure. Let that go ahead OK. Live and let live, etc. But hey? Some knobhead wants to sit on his/her plastic bathtub to get a closer view of a display, which then doesn't take place due to his/her selfish arrogance, much to the displeasure of thousands of people who've gathered to witness the spectacle? That's just fine, because "boat owners' lives matter".

You really couldn't make this st up...

Boatists. Worse than bloody cyclists. Swarms of them, towing their stupid boats on stupid trailers down narrow Devonian and Cornish roads. You can't overtake them, they're slow, take up too much road, refuse to use passing places, etc, etc. Someone ought to ban them. Or build special 'boat trailer lanes' alongside the normal carriageway...

Or.......in the post-Shoreham world, was this a deliberate tactic by an 'anti' knowing that the display might get canned as a result?

At Bournemouth they have a volunteer service on jet skis and ribs patrolling the area and have done for a few years now so people should be well versed in keeping clear. I’ll find out Thursday when I go to watch.

What exactly are the volunteer jet ski gang going to do ?

At Dartmouth the boat owner was asked to move and refused , when push came to shove there was nothing they could actually do.

Maybe the Typhoon should be armed?

As in previous years they enforce the maritime safety zone. This is the 2nd year of a wider zone and they never have any issues as they’re out on the water prior to the pleasure boats arriving, they also have support of the police launch.

https://d2hpz65nz61hf.cloudfront.net/live/wp-conte...

It was Eastbourne airshow last week and they had no issues what happened at Dartmouth is just an isolated incident at a regatta.

Why wasn't the exclusion zone enforced, see page two:

Maybe it wasn't backed up by anything legal ?

This part ' Violation of exclusion zones will force postponement, and possible cancellation of the air display, at
considerable cost and loss to the public. ' seems to come across as there asking the mariners for a favour rather than actually ordering them out of the area , and it seems on sunday they met a somebody stubborn as fk but who knew his rights and when push came to shove the authorities had no legal means of forcing him to move.

For the record if he was in the red exclusion zone then would it really of been that hard for them to move just out of it ?

A shame all round really , the display was cancelled but the organisers need to plan for legally removing boats in the exclusion zone rather than hoping empty threats work.

That was my conclusion too though other similar notices do stress 'enforcement' e.g.

The Sunderland documents refer to a 'Maritime Exclusion Zone' is this not enforceable in law?

If so, then why was Dartmouth not using the same method?

The previous example referring to road closures is only relevant if the above MEZ is enforceable in law in the same way a road closure is.

Steve

Note. Subsequent searches have only found 'Maritime Exclusion Zone' in the context of military use.
