I see the trains for HS2 are going to be built by a foreign company. This was a golden opportunity for them to set up a brand new British factory and give them the order, it would have been a showcase for British engineering and it would have been a point of pride for Britain.

We have zero (and when I say zero, I mean zero) industry left in Britain, they have deliberately waged war against Britain's industries for decades, and they are still doing it. They had no intention of allowing these trains for Britain's railways to be built by a British company, they literally couldn't wait to give this massive contract to a foreign company (as they do with every single industry). They done the same thing with the trains for the East Coast Mainline recently, the first time in nearly 200 years trains for Britain's E.C.M.L. will be foreign.

It is disgusting, disgraceful and humiliating for a major European country with a famous history of engineering like Britain to have zero industry of our own. France, Germany and Italy have massive industries in several fields. They all have their own car industries, we have none in our own hands. They all have commercial shipbuilding industries, we have none. Germany produces 42 million tonnes of steel per year, France 15 million tonnes, Italy 23 million tonnes. Britain produces an embarrassing 7 million tonnes. Even tiny Belgium produces more steel than us. Whatever policies that are in place that are allowing them to do this, put them in place in our country. Germany produces 60 million tonnes of coal every year, we produce well under 10 million tonnes. Germany and France design and build their own trains, we don't. Even Spain makes trains. Germany designs and builds wind turbines, we do not. Even tiny Denmark designs and builds wind turbines.

If we had lost SOME of our industries, fair enough, but not EVERY SINGLE LAST ONE of them. Is it too much to ask to have even 1 industry of our own?

We will always need trains, so this is the 1 industry that we can sustain (provided war isn't being deliberately waged against British industry). Do the French and Germans (who also have many other massive industries in their own hands) ask foreign companies to design and build their trains for them? We do not want this humiliation either (in every single field too mind you). What are we going to do, go cap in hand to a foreign company every single time Britain needs trains from now until forever? We never would have had a George Stephenson or a Flying Scotsman or a Mallard if this had always went on. We will never have anything like that ever again if this always continues.

We do not want to be the ONLY major European country with zero industries of our own. We want even 1 industry of our own here in Britain, and train making would be just the thing.

Climate change targets. Easier to export the emissions to another country.

It will if we get out of following EU tendering rules, which I hope we do.

Top gear shows just what we do make.

And forget the crap about "Germnay only buys german cars etc etc" because they dont. And manufacturers like Merc, BMW, VW group, Renault etc are public owned companies. Which they are owned by... the public. So you two can own a piece of your despised "foreign" industry. If you have a pension, you'll probably find they invest in car ccompanies all over thew world so you already own a piece of those manugfacturers. And the japanese companies, American ones, korean ones, Italian ones etc etc etc

One of the few countries which doesnt build any cars is Australia. Their cars get built ....here in the UK

The manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers saw the largest divisional growth of £6.2 billion, to £54.8 billion in 2016.
So not quite zero. You fool.

The new ECM and Greater Western High Speed trains are being built by Hitachi Rail Europe in Newton Aycliffe, Co. Durham.

Both HRE and Bombardier (who build trains in Derby) are bidding for HS2, other 3 are from France, Spain, Germany.

The Nissan plant in Tyne and Wear makes 500K cars per year - more than many entire countries. UK output was approx 1.7M cars in 2016. Italy (quoted as one of your examples) only made 700k in 2016, France (another of your examples) made 1.6M.

I bet you’re fun at a party!

I bet this thread will go the way of your shipbuilding one: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I also note that you say we have no commercial shipbuilding industry..... that’s untrue.

I await your thread on the British Aviation industry.

I also like your views on the British automotive industry:

Also we should buy back JLR, Rolls Royce, etc. at the first opportunity.

Please don't use a muppet like jeremy Clarkson and that st show as proof off how amazing British industries are.
99% are owned by companies outside of Britain, they're merely screwed/assembled together here, before being shipped out again, to be sold abroad.

The 'made in Britain' stamp still has some little meaning behind it (FAR less than in the past), the day will soon come that foreign owned, former British companies quickly disappear to other more efficient countries to be made and sold.

Sorry but that's the reality. Those wanting to live with their heads buried in sand are just living in denial.

Unfortunately we're here in a time of decline, hopefully I'll be long gone before its completely eradicated, which it will be.

I believe that part of the HS2 contract is that the trains will have to at least be assembled in the UK.

And for every manufacturer that gets owned by an overseas company a new one starts up or gets stronger.

Look at Ginetta now selling customer cars for LMP1
I don’t think anyone expected that 10 years ago!

Ariel with the atom, nomad and their motorbike seem to be doing very well.

Morgan seem to be doing well still.

Then looking at other industries you have Exposure who make the best torches in the world for cycling and sailing, spinlock and crewsaver the best lifejackets you can buy.

But I could keep going instead here’s some proper facts about the UK aerospace, defence and space sectors. £72bn turnover last year would suggest we’re doing quite well!! https://www.adsgroup.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sit... so yes some of the businesses aren’t owned by British businesses but if it keeps people employed and skills in the UK then who cares?

Have you ever looked at the facts? Any of the facts, ever? We live among people like you, it's a touch worrying.

So commercial wings off planes are owned/made here?..

That's some slim pickings

For god's sake, the invitation to tender for the HS2 trains has not even been issued yet. 5 companies have pre-qualified and the ITT is expected in Spring 2018 so how can it have been decided that a foreign company is to build the HS2 rolling stock? I despair.

I have no idea on what's happening with HS2. it's the delusional people who see Britain as being a manufacturing/cutting edge/industrial country in the world that get me.
It's (unfortunately) in huge decline, and that trend won't stop.
