Diggle railway station...Then and now.

Diggle Railway station, as it looked around 1920:-


As it looks today:-


The tracks in the second picture at the bottom right are about to run into the three mile long Standedge Tunnel, which emerges at Marsden in West Yorkshire.

The two single tracks in the first picture on the left ran into the original single tunnels now closed.

A sad old sight indeed.

I will never fully understand why they ripped out the platforms on closed stations and totally recked the area.

Yes I can understand removing the buildings as the'd become vandalised, but why bother with the platforms. It does seem that there was wholesale distruction so that the chance of stations ever reopening would be minimal and far too costly because of it.

I used to drive trains through Diggle for years, nice to see how it was yesteryear.

I cross that bridge a few times a month going upto the ranges and never knew it was a train station below!
