Why do airline passengers always look so scruffy nowadays ?
Discussion
I look scruffier the better cabin I'm in :-)
I'd like to think that its because I want everyone to know that my ticket is paid for and I didn't dress up to get an upgrade. Unfortunately its much more likely that there is no lounge , I left the hotel at 3am to get the return flight, that every decent bit of clothing I have covered in the ubiquitous dust that seems present in every from Bucharest to HK .

I always dress smart casual for a flight (mainly because I’m a PBCD) but don’t believe in any of that shizzle about it qualifying for an upgrade, that’s all done via reward schemes these days.
My utter traveller nemesis is the bloke going on his summer holidays in a football shirt. You’re not playing for the team mate, you’re not 7 years old, you’re going for a two star all inclusive to Magaluf and you look like an utter prick. See ‘Council’ thread.
I used to think that people who wear sweatpants and hoodies to fly were too casual, especially long haul, but if you examine it purely from the angle of “what is the most comfortable attire to be sat in the same seat for 12hrs?” then they probably have a point. Just don’t sit next to me, right!

I don’t own jogging bottoms because I neither jog nor burgle peoples homes for a living but I am always in jeans and a hoodie when I board. I’m a great person to be sat next to though as I always pick an aisle seat and weigh 11 stone wet so there’s no danger of me encroaching on your personal space. I do the dressing like a tramp in business class thing too. I know the chances of an upgrade are next to nil since I’m rarely a solo traveller and don’t have any meaningful airline status most years because I don’t travel for work so I’ve nothing to lose.
Jeans and polo shirt here, regardless of class of travel.
In general, I’ve noticed that people in long haul BA Biz tend to dress much more smartly (ie suits with ties still on) than those travelling in Biz / Fist on EK / QR etc. On the BA flights, one can almost feel them looking at you in your jeans and silently tutting!

Smart Casual short haul. Long haul - same as I like using lounges (My priority pass card is a godsend), but invariably have a pair of tracksuit bottoms in my bag for sleeping in - I never settle well in the cheap seats, tracksuit bottom and a neck pillow makes life slightly more tolerable.
More chance of getting an upgrade if you at least look the part.

The ones dressed smart are all BA staff and crew members partners going on free holidays, just ignore them. They’re only grumpy as they couldn’t get in first. djc206 said:

There is someone on PH who on a thread a couple of years ago was saying that when they went on holiday on a plane back in the 70s his mum and dad made him wear a full on suit, shirt and tie etc. Brilliant!

I laugh at the football shirt, shorts and flip flop brigade getting off the flight from Florida at 07:00 at Gatwick shivering but trying to play it cool look at my tan and gold necklace.....
Agreed. Mid-winter, on a night shift when I'm wearing multiple layers of clothes to fight off the wind, rain, snow, and you meet the flight from somewhere like Las Palmas or Sharm El Sheikh and they always, always, remark at how surprised they are it is cold at 1am in the UK in January...Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
