A question from the uneducated. How much fuel would have to be in reserve on a flight like this (or any other long haul, I guess?)

Reserve fuel would be the total of,

1.Contingency fuel (3% of fuel needed for flight) - for unexpected stuff c2500kg
2. Alternate fuel. - To get to alternate (probably Gatwick) c1400kg
3. Final reserve fuel - 30 mins holding c1900kg
4. Plus any Extra as it’s the first flight and everyone’s watching maybe an extra 2,000kg

So probably 5800kg minimum. Maybe around 8,000kg of fuel.

I was interested where the crew rest as a 787 doesn't look the biggest of aircraft.

Not sure i want to sit in the same seat for 17hrs.

I would also miss the excuse for a couple of days in HK or Singapore as well.

I've heard the rear galley of a 787 offers similar views to Victoria Peak. You knew what he meant

i thought that with the inflight smoking ban the smog would not be as bad in a 787

Crew rest is up in the ceiling. They're very comfortable compared to older crew rest - 100% conditioned air, adjustable temp, and a phone to order your brew for when you come out. . .

My wife and I flew from Heathrow to Brisbane via Malaysia once on BA, when they did a promotion, buy one business class seat, get the second one free.
These were flat-bed seats, all the way there and back, but after around 10 hours into the 13 hour leg to Malaysia, I was ready to jump out without a parachute, as I knew that after a couple of hours layover, there was another 8 hours to Brisbane.
I bit the bullet and suffered the return leg, as I knew that within an hour and a half of landing, I’d be in the back of a Black Cab, belting down the M4 going home.

It’s only really of interest to Brits and Australians.

Years ago the British went to Australia in prison ships, and to do some genocide in Tasmania, then the ten pound package whinging poms went over in the 60s and 70s. and finally year off travelers went to stay in Bondi before Australians found iron ore and Sydney became so expensive.

In the other direction Australians came to fight in wars and then work in bars, play James Bond and play cricket.

Now you can finally do it non stop.

It’s really about celebrating the close and unique connection Britain still has with Australia.

Before the queen dies and they become a republic.

If Qantas feel the economy 3-3-3 set up is fine for a 17 hour flight I guess that's another nail in the coffin for vaguely comfortable economy flying.
