Bruntingthorpe Cold War Jets 2018

I went up to the Cold War Jets show at Bruntingthorpe last weekend where they perform fast taxi runs with aircraft including those the CAA won't give permission to fly as they are deemed "complex" types.
This show was something I had been meaning to do for a while. My eldest joined Air Cadets a few months ago so that was I good excuse for the two of us to clear off and be nerdy for a bit. It was a good show, though I can only marvel at the self control of the pilots who can only fast taxi the aircraft such as the Lightning, Buccaneer and Victor with out taking off. It must be a temptation however professional they are. It's bad enough moving the Westfield around the drive when it's SORN'ed.
Anyway some pictures. We got to go in the Super Guppy, Shackleton, Comet & VC-10. All the other aircraft were very accessible as well.
We'll probably go back again when we get the chance.
Canberra interior - this one does a taxi run
Shackleton interior. This project is still in a fairly early stage thought they have made good progress with the basic structure.

I posted here last night about my Dad working on the Canberra’s then deleted as wanted to check a few facts. My Father did a lot of work/design on them in their day, including redesigning the cockpit. I'm glad you enjoyed the day, it's a pretty good, low/non H&S day of big boys toys.

On WT333 he worked on ‘the cockpit, equipment in the bomb bay, and the missile Sub-Harpoon in the monocoque.’
He’s in his 80s now but still gets contacted for info, was at Bruntingthorpe a couple of years ago for the anniversary as a guest, with taxi run and has given talks etc over the years. I sent him a link to this thread and will also the other thread as he is part of a Canberra SIG group too
I don't know of one in this country. IIRC some years ago there were issues with giving too many Phantoms to museums in the UK as they were still considered by some arms treaties to be potential frontline aircraft. It was mentioned in a documentary featuring Ray & Mark Hanna. I'm not sure if that is still the case.

Taken from the Thunder&Lightnings webpage: "Ludicrously despite being partly manufactured by UK firms, and bought with UK taxpayer's money, the USA had stipulated that the aircraft could not be disposed of to non-government organisations. Thus an important part of the UK's aviation history has for the most part been reduced to scrap despite museums across the country crying out for a chance to exhibit an example of this powerful aircraft. A few have somehow escaped the bureaucratic edicts from above, but it is a small number. Most that were not immediately scrapped on retirement have succumbed to the scrapman's attentions in the years since, the final mean-spirited act in the story of the UK's Phantoms."

Hope your son loves Air Cadets... I joined on my 13th birthday! Couldn't wait to get in and left at 18 when I went to uni... I have great memories..... one of them being on Camp at RAF Wyton and got the chance to fly in the back right seat on a Canberra sortie. This would have been 1990/91... Rory Underwood the Rugby player I think was on the squadron at Wyton, although I didn't see him.
Basically, I got a flight where we flew out over The Wash, and were used as bait for 2 x F3 Tornado's to intercept us from different points.... was about 1.5hr flight but was over all too soon! So even though it was a very old type by then, it still felt like the equivalent of a sports car!

I love the old WW2 stuff/bombers but there’s something about Cold War jets too.
Dad would have started his career in the early ‘50s and when he was a teen had a spare Canberra cockpit that he started playing around with and redesigned. Every one that went in for service was then refitted. He told me a story of how he was scribbling on a piece of paper and his boss asked him what he was doing then sent him to see the big boss. Dad was scared he was in trouble! But they looked at the designs and took them on board giving him the stuff to play about with etc.
He flew on a Dakota regularly and other stuff too. I was lucky enough to see one of the last fights of
XH134. Not great pics as Just from a phone.

Yes he is. Although that’s not even a tiny fraction of what he has! Two bedrooms, a double garage and a barn full!! A massive collection of DC3/Dakota’s. Currently working on more for next years ‘Dacs over Normandy’ event next year at a Duxford. Is he still building models?
I hated the ATC to be honest, too many little Hitlers!
But some of the perks of being in it in Lincs, man. Get in everything at Mildenhall, A10, C5, AH64 and countless others, there both days in a tent!.
Great trip to Alconbury when they ran the Rf4C and the Aggressors there, right on the runway, sat in an F4 and an F5, got a real thorough look at how they process the shots, and why they ran the Aggressor unit. Great days

Yes that’s what I was told. I’ve already bought him some expensive slippers I’ll give him some money so he can use his discount and order one. He’s worth it I wish I had a daughter who was so thoughtful.
