Good reminder! - need to get entry in before 23rd before big entry fee increase
Boat is based in Sparkes next to HISC and class start time is 7.20 am so need to organise another MDL berth in pontoon on friday night in Hamble or see if anything is left in Cowes on the day
Alternatively face absolute unrealistic dread of leaving Hayling at 4.30am ish and returning after finish - can't really face that.

We normally do RTI, but 3 of us took the boat down to Baiona in NE Spain last week - skipper is doing ARC 'Rally Portugal' across June/July, and the boat won't be back in the Hamble until the end of August ready for the Cherbourg Race (start of 2019 Fastnet qualifying campaign).
We had a lovely sail from Plymouth down to Baiona across the Bay of Biscay... 560nm, 3 days 15 hours, mostly down wind (kite up >50% of the time). Took the win as well

Yep...I'll be there on my new to me Bavaria 32. Got a little shakedown cruise to the West Country starting tomorrow so we should be fully fettled and ready to go by RTIR.
Looking forward to this year so we can make up for a distinctly lackluster performance in 2017...last year I'd borrowed my mate's Feeling 426...very good of him to lend her to me however she'd not been scrubbed and AF'd in nearly a year and we were s l o w. It was pretty obvious from the start line we had a major problem so we just cracked open some beers and just enjoyed our plod round...getting caught by lots of purple flaggers by the end! She was then AF'd a few weeks later and the yard said there was a wheelbarrow full of mussels under her!!

I had a really early entry in back in January, pending Empress of Blandings coming back from France this spring. Then we found baby no. 2 was on the way and it buggered up our plans.
2000 miles and a Biscay crossing with a 1 year-old would have been just about ok, but with a pregnant wife too was pushing our luck a bit.

Hadn't planned to, but the old man called it in as favour for a friend who has it on his bucket list.
Need to get myself a crew sorted. Usually fly a load of Italians in to do the hard work while I drink gin and sport a fine pair of faded red trousers.
Bit of a pain coming down from Lymington only to turn round, head back past Lymington and then have to push the tide back home later in the afternoon.

Well it does not look as if it is going to be a windy one - was idling musing whether with a mere 1.5m draft and with predicted light conditions i might have a go at threading between goose rock and the varvassi and then i came across this - not as bad as alchemist but at the end of the video - i guess they just have a little tap and carry on? I guess with the speed of the ebbing tide there its easy not to turn sharp enough left...anyone here done this route successfully and got any tips? It's more of a bucket list thing really - not because i think cutting the corner will put us at the sharp end of the fleet!

Heard a boat sink trying that in 2016 - the Admiral of one of the sailing clubs had lent his half tonner to a friend... who promptly sank it.

We were long gone by the time this happened, but we saw 2 yachts dis-masted, multiple broaches & Chinese gybes, and heard multiple AIS alarms for MOB's. Peak wind speeds of >40knts made for a very fast rounding and a new PB boat speed for me (18.6knts... reaching on a 1st 45, with a reefed main and #1). Best RTI I've done.

I have a great photo of us and the waves from 2016.
Blimey 2016 looks spectacular! I did it on a mates 26 foot bilge keeled cruiser last year with no kite - took 11.5 hours - i was thirsty by the time we got to Cowes. It was my first sail for about 30 years - got the bloody bug again and now got a little j/80 which hopefully will get round a bit quicker this year even with the predicted light winds.
18.6 knots must have been pretty epic in 40 knots of wind - i sailed to lymington with 2 lightweight crew a couple of weeks ago in 30 knots of wind on the nose which with a non-reefable main and a shagged jib with a hooked leach was challenging. It was the perfect excuse to buy a new more controllable mylar jib - and get an old training main fitted with a reef for cruising. Hope there is a decent sea breeze effect in the afternoon as a bit of planing with the kite up will make it all worthwhile.

Worst of the sea for us was just after rounding the Needles... some proper white tops.
This happened just in front of us near Sandown when the sea had calmed down a bit, but it was still blowing >30knts... running too little backstay as we could see the mast flexing from a hundred meters away. Few minutes later there's a loud crack, and down it comes.
Our kite stayed in the sail locker, but we did see a few J's flying A's... or trying to... flying along, broach, pop back up, sort everything out, shoot off, then broach again

It was brilliant. Our typical down wind speed is c.12 with a kite up in c.20knts of wind, so 18.6 felt bloody fast - we were surfing (obviously), and as the speed really picked up the boat started to hum, quite loudly. I guess there's a point where the rigging is under so much load it vibrates.
Then you remember the Americas Cup foiling cats were doing 40+ in less than 20knts of wind... or the Vendee monohulls doing mid/high 20's for day after day in the Southern Ocean, single handed
