Surely this is reasonably well risk assessed?

Unless the up train uses the down line smile

It does depend on the station concerned, does it have fast trains or freight trains to pass through etc.

It looks like a vulnerable position to me - if a train did happen to appear at speed unnanounced the kid could easily get into a bit of a panic and fall or lunge forward as he got on his feet.

I wouldn’t let my kid do that on our local heritage railway where the trains do 25mph and can be heard a mile away, let alone a main line of any description. If I saw the same I’d think the parents had no sense of risk aversion but probably wouldn’t stand there gawking iPhone-in-hand.

Hopefully all the negative publicity will let him see the error of his ways.

It's an sign of the times that whilst the children have to be obscured, the adult is paraded in all his glory to be humiliated and abused on social media.

The more I look at that photo the more I realise what a non-event it is. 'Boy looks over edge while nothing is coming'.

As it's Trowbridge, it's in GWR country. Speaking as a repeated victim of their inability to locate their metaphorical corporate rectum with both their metaphorical corporate hands in so far as running a railway is concerned, I'd wager that the boy was in no material danger of any train passing however long he had his head theresmile!

When I was that lad's age I used to get up to all sorts of mischief on the railways (somewhere I still have some pennies flattened by the City of Truro). By comparison, looking over a platform edge supervised by your father is hardly risky.

Complete non story...... its actually tremendously sad that someone actually reported the poor man in the first place.... no wonder the youth of today are stuck behind their phones indoors, if anytime they do anything deemed remotely risky, some do-gooder reports them....

They should travel to India where much younger kids are sleeping on the streets.... maybe they could do some do-goodering there and make an actual difference....

And you know that for sure? Willing to bet your kid's life on it? You know when freight and empty stock moves are planned to run through the station?

It's a dick move by the parent who should know better. Teaching kids about railway safety is important and sadly this twonk will probably complain and try and sue the rail company when little Johnny gets mown down by a train he didn't hear coming later on in life because daddy lets others be responsible for his kids safety.

As I said, Twonk.

It's like the old Elf n Safeteee - Don't' do anything, it isn't safe
Current H&S - How to do something safely

Which style makes a better parent?

I can't believe anyone is defending this guy?

Don't know what sort of traffic that station gets but you never know whats coming next

It would only take one of those girls to distract the dad for a minute, express train comes through, kid gets beheaded or panics and falls off the edge.

No reason for the kid to be laying like that. I'm all for a bit of risk but some things you don't mess with. Trains being one of them.

Correct. It's a dick move by the father. If a train were to come (highly unlikely, but it could happen), it would ruin the train drivers life and career, it would end the childs life, the childs family would be devastated, everyone stood at that train station would remember it for the rest of their lives, as could the railway workers who have to attend. Trains aren't to be messed with, and I can't believe this father is allowing the child to do this.

Well said that man.

To give balance, I have myself launched into a tirade against a GWR platform person who declared I could not stand beyond a particular lamp post on a platform (to view a steam locomotive) "for health and safety reasons". As if trains might mount the platform beyond that point.

The guy is a dick, pure and simple, whether he thinks he 'knows the timetable' or not, a light engine, tamper, railgrinder, an unscheduled empty stock etc move could have gone through at line speed (50mph in this case), the approach to the platform is slightly obscured to an oncoming driver too at this station. As a driver with one fatality on my record the idea that this is seemingly fine with some is just plain daft.

Hardly, the guy worked for Network Rail...... I would be more disappointed if he'd 'turned the other cheek' and ignored it.

Would have been a non-story in all likelihood had the dim-witted father not taken the attitude he did to the guy.
