Appears that someone has managed to take an Alaskan airlines plane for a joyride. The plane was eventually intercepted but fighter jets and subsequently crashed, not sure if the tow events are linked. Really didnt think it was possible to steal a commercial aircraft! Luckily it appears only the pilot was aboard and no injuries to anyone on the ground.

Appears he has taken it upside down and done a full loop.......

He has also crashed apparently. Not in the above video but after it was filmed.

The ATC recordings are not an easy listen, hope he's at peace now.

Heard this early this morning and it got me thinking a bit,

Modern flight sims ‘games’ are incredibly realistic these days and when I travel I always see small private aircraft parked up around the airport. If you managed to get access to the apron would it actually be possible just to nick it and fly off? (Obviously fighter aircraft would be scrambled soon after and it wouldn’t end well for you but is it possible?)

Most light aircraft have keys (like a car) so unless you can bypass that issue, you won't be going anywhere.

Taking off is fairly easy. Landing is more of a problem if you've not done it before.

Not the most important point, admittedly, but very limited vocabulary in that video!

His barrel roll was a bit crap! Guess there's more to it than holding the yoke to one side!

I'm amazed the wings didn't come off. He must have kept a reasonable G load on the structure.

Bloke doesn’t sound right does he, seemed to be doing a pretty good job with that Dash though. The controller did well trying to get him to land, not a good day at work for him.

Listened to the ATC recording, kudos to the controller for trying his best in that situation, with the knowledge that he might be the last person to speak to this guy.

"Rich" admits that he will have let a few people down and had plenty of people that love him, but that he was a broken man and didn't think he had a few screws loose until now.

A few people on a site I frequent are now saying that there will be extra security etc... But this guy was ground crew, with various reports stating he was a mechanic, how can you tighten down on that... The guy could have been a pilot with a few screws loose and done the same thing, minds can be fragile things and anyone can go from normality to a few screws loose with a few variables added to their life.

The fact he managed to do a barrel roll and apparently looped the plane without breaking the plane up and that it came down with the possibility of only one unfortunate loss of life (no confirmation that he is alive or dead yet) it is very lucky that lives were not put at serious risk.

An understandable reaction if they thought there were passengers on board!

It will be interesting to see what stresses he put on the airframe and possibly see how it coped.

Obviously it’s a tragic event but at least some good will come of it and also perhaps a greater awareness of mental illness and more positive ways of society dealing with it.

I read a while back about the stress that airline employees face, mechanics and ground crew having to work all out to get the planes back into revenue service. The pilots having to deal with more mental tasks nowadays than the physical flying of an aircraft (not a pilot so I do not know how true that is, but with the invention of more advanced avionics, some planes just need a pilot to take off and land with everything else being pre plotted into a computer), coupled with stress at home it can't be a great job if you have mental illness of any kind.

Sturdy things, remember though it was 'empty' and did I read he was voicing concerns about fuel levels?

Might only have been somewhere around 2/3rds MTOW, leaving a bit more room for some extra g.
Yep he said he had 2100lbs of fuel at one point.

MTOW of a Q400 is just over 30t. Empty is ~18t and he had 1t of fuel so you’re pretty much bang on!
