Am wondering if anyone attended the AGM this year? I finally got to read the motions being proposed and it looked like a fun one to attend given the controversy surrounding the award that was taken back!

They’ve published a statement and the class is closed. She has not been re-awarded the trophy.

“At the 2018 AGM, two motions were voted on by members regarding the award of the Bill Woodhams Trophy in 2014 to Tracey Curtis-Taylor. This was subsequently rescinded following a member’s motion in 2016.

The Light Aircraft Association makes a number of such awards each year, recognising flying activities, services to fellow members and the quality of their work on either home-built aircraft or vintage types restored to flight by its 7,500-plus members. The recipients are selected by a small committee of unpaid volunteers. The Bill Woodhams Trophy for navigation is just one of this wide range of awards.

The two motions placed at the 2018 AGM sought to debate the rescinding of the award, and the matter was discussed at the AGM with both written and verbal submissions from both sides, including from Tracey Curtis-Taylor in person.

The first Motion, seeking acknowledgement that the rescinding of the award was inappropriate, was defeated by 389 member votes to 82.

The second Motion, seeking the reinstatement of the award, was defeated by 277 member votes to 202.

The removal of the award therefore stands and the matter is now considered closed. The LAA has no further comment to make on the award or its recipients.

What caused them to take the trophy away?

They awarded it to Tracey Lee-Curtis for her solo navigation around the globe (not for mowing down a Robinson helicopter at Goodwood) it then came to light she used technology/followed the support plane and so on so not a feat of navigation.

Old news, as reported in the press back in 2016... https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/712989/Pilot-Tra...
https://www.flyer.co.uk/tracey-curtis-taylor-unhur...

Allegations of a qualified instructor occupying the front seat as a 'passenger', and of GPS technology and a support 'plane on supposedly solo flights. According to her it's a storm in a teacup, no prize money awarded, just possession of a trophy for a year. She claims the LAA is an 'old school tie' type old boys' club. They want to take her name out of the club's records as winner of this award to 'maintain the club's integrity'.

However you want to look at it, it was an ambitious and tough trip to make, especially in a 1940s Stearman. But regardless of whether her award is rescinded or not, it won't make a jot of difference to anything at all. It wasn't a "first" or a "first for a woman", just trips to mark achievements made by an earlier generation of pioneering female pilots. Whatever decision is made, no-one is re-writing history...

Technically not old news though as it was discussed and voted on at last months AGM. She even attended to put her case forward so considering it’s “an old school tie boys club” it must mean something to her.

And yes the award was rescinded as mentioned earlier.

I have to admire her still trying to get the award back several years later. Must have damaged all her sponsorship losing it i guess.

Had planned to attend but voted by post instead. Glad they didn’t give the award back.
