Where do I find things like static but running aero engines on display. eg, a Merlin or big radial on a trailer, or any sort of show that involves turning fuel into noise for fun? Have done "Cold War jets" at Bruntingthorpe which was ace but what other things are there? Are there any other air museums that start the displays up at any time without necessarily moving them?

You often get a few trailer mounted Merlin, Griffin and P&W radial engines at Duxford airshows, and I have seen them at various car shows as well.

Chemical Chaos seems to know a lot about this? He's got a thread in Reader's Rides which i've linked to below to save you 10 minutes looking for it, but it might well allow you find what you want to know

Smaller air shows and military vehicle shows often have static engines on display. Went to one run by the Essex military vehicle club that had a merlin and a AsH radial (think it was a Russian clone of a Pratt and Witney radial) running and you could get really close.

Pretty much any VSCC event will have aero engined cars competing but the events at Shelsley Walsh are the most spectacular and well supported. Not quite what you are after but a good day out nonetheless!

Since last year, stationary airplane engines are also on display at some dates at Santa Pod Raceway,

check their schedule and details of events, as a benefit you might get some nitro racing as an extra.

I went to a Family Day at Rolls Royce in Filton a few years ago and they had a Eurofighter (I think) engine running on their test rig, with a long queue of kids waiting to play with the big throttle lever.

Shackleton WR963 lives at Coventry and clears her throat at irregular intervals; the next appears to be 6th of April.

The one at work comes out fairly regularly. It has a much nicer trailer now, without Metro wheels hehe
