Had the privilege of watching a B52 flying only a few hundred feet directly overhead on its way to an emergency landing at Mildenhall on Monday evening having lost 2 engines.

Fortunately it made a safe landing but it was an awesome sight and the noise from the remaining engines was deafening.

I didn't realise how big those things are. We get a lot of planes going over from Stansted and others heading to Mildenhall and Lakenheath but this was something else.

Took this long range iPhone pic of it parked up at Mildenhall on Thursday, doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.

Also spotted this bad boy

Photo doesn't really say much, the engines (with bungs in, normal) may have been shut down as a precautionary measure. Unless there was smoke and flames coming from them...

laugh

As there's no UK deployment at the moment, I assume it was en-route back to USA from deployment in Med or ME area when it developed engine issues.

It’s still there. Apparently suffered wing damage and there is talk of it possibly being unrepairable and therefore scrapped.

So chances of a third B52 coming back from the Boneyard? Bet they never thought that would happen!

I'd love to know how these sort of updates get out to the public. I bet in reality there's only a handful of people who know the state of the aircraft and it's future.

Given its still there, and it doesn't take this long to do even a multiple engine change on a BUFF, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce that there's other damage of a more serious nature.

Plus everyone talks, news gets out pretty quick. Loads of people directly involved must have seen it and told a few others the situation, they then tell a few others etc someone posts it on a forum and away the news goes.

It’s not like it’s a massive secret that it’s sitting there damaged.

There's a huge difference between it's got a bit of damage on the wing to the thing being written off!
Structural repairs take time, if it's not standard the repair has to get drawn up which will probably take a few weeks, then you have to get a team in to do the work..... so yes it takes time, but it certainly doesn't necessarily mean it's been written off and will be scrapped!

There’s also a difference between “there’s talk of it being scrapped” and “it’s going to scrapped” wink

Sure, I’ve no idea about the aircraft, I’m just showing how news could get out that might actually be very accurate.
