As far as I am concerned, a B17 looks like this:

I know the location (Hamm) but can anyone help with identifying the Bomb Group, Squadron or even the actual aircraft?

390 Bomb Group, 22 April 1944. l]
800 bombers of various types attacked the marshalling yards at Hamm that day...
The photo is stamped with the target, date and altitude, maybe the SAV 421 could shed some more light, but unlikely to ID a random B17 flying beneath the photo plane.
Good luck.

Has the aircraft, crew lists, crew losses, etc for that raid, but for B24s, not B17s. Seems they all had a go that day.
This got me searching. When I worked for my employer in Germany back in around 1991, one of my menial jobs was to sort out the archive. Whilst doing this I came across a photo of the HQ office building I was working in, with the whole middle section missing after an RAF bombing mission on the area. In total 156 tonnes of bombs fell on the factory in 2 minutes. This was long before the worldwide web, but I have just searched on Google and someone in that town has indeed uploaded it. Apparently 300 workers died that night (10.03.45) including many forced labourers. Anyway here it is. The building was rebuilt and my office was in the missing roof section, so my predecessor wouldn't have known anything about it if he was working up there. Well aimed though...

It was rather busy in the skies over Hamm that day, virtually the whole 8th Air Force was up there, 800 bombers plus the same number of fighters.

Interesting how the last ‘missions’ flown by the B24s in 1945 were ‘cooks’ tours’ to give ground crews a taste of flying over Germany.
My Father converted from Mosquito to Lancaster in order to fly 'Cooks tours'.I expect he primarily wanted a 4 engine rating ready for civvy street.
