Flying north just west of Tetbury. Spitfire with D-day markings and sporting USAAF roundals. Possibly non-merlin engined (Griffon)?

I doubt if it's a Griffon powered one. As far as I know, the USAAF never operated Griffon Spitfires.

Single engined piston aeroplane, elipitical wings, underneath painted white with D-day wing stripes, blue roundels with white stars. Definitely no red anywhere. I can only say what I saw. I wouldn't have bothered posting if I didn't think it was unusual.

As I say it didn't sound instantly recognisable as a Merlin but that may have been as it was cruising at a constant low throttle.

The Thunderbolt does have a semi-elliptical shape to its wings - although it is a much bigger, fatter and heavier aircraft than a Spitfire.

Almost certainly it was the P-47 seen by OP, as Nellie flew from Bournemouth to Northern Ireland yesterday morning, and took a route across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Cheshire and up towards Blackpool and then across to NI.
