Is there a site, or app which will show me the standard departure and approach paths for an airport, up to, say, 20km from the airport itself?

And if there is, how useful is 'standard' anyway?

We're considering a new house in France, which isn't far from a city with a (non major) airport, and want to know how often, if at all, planes fly overhead. Obviously, departure is more important that approach.

You could download the Flight Radar app, locate your house, and watch aircraft fly over it in real time.

SID (Standard Instrument Departures) and STAR (Standard instrument arrivals) are available here:
https://www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr/dvd/eAIP_1...

Click AD2 on the left and then select your local aerodrome.

Shout if you need a translation from aviatibabble.

Flightradar24 is far more likely to be helpful. SIDs and STARs would be pretty incomprehensible to most people and dont give any indication of frequency of use.

Thank you all. I considered FlightRadar, but wondered whether the 'prescribed' paths were recorded, or if they varied according to wind, weather, destination and so on.

Have a search on http://noise.eea.europa.eu/

All UK airports have to have publically available noise impact statements so I assume French ones do too.

Yes, all of those. And aircraft type. And size. And equipment fitted.

Best just to watch Flightradar to get an overview.

FR24 won't show military, which won't end well for him if his place is within a couple of miles of the French equivalent of Mildenhall or Lakenheath.. hehe

You are buying a house on the airfield itself?? It's a general aviation airfield with a very occasional bizjet. Local flying club will probably be doing pattern work whenever the sun is out so if you live within a mile of either end of the runway or a mile adjacent of the runway you'll have single-engine props up to 1000ft above you, which can quickly become annoying. If you're a couple of miles or more away from the airport you should have relative peace and quiet from the sky. Cognac Chateaubernard Air Base is 26 miles away to the west so won't affect you. All other air traffic is at cruising flight levels so you won't even hear them.

Civilian traffic within approx 25 mile radius: https://www.flightradar24.com/45.71,0.13/10

+ any traffic going into Bordeaux will still be at 15,000ft or more when passing you and departing traffic will be well over 20,000ft in the climb, so barely noticeable.

Not on the airfield, no. Around 10km as the crow flies. And we're not necessarily buying it, just considering it, and I do like to do my homework thoroughly. wink

Well at 10km from that airfield their traffic certainly won't affect you hehe, but you could be near another airfield instead. FR24 only tend to show the airfields/airports that have/had commercial flight activity, not the GA airfields nor military bases, so you'll need to be more specific if you want a proper answer. A busy GA airfield with a flight school and/or aero club will be just as annoying as a commercial airport with that same propeller drone flying over the top of you every 5 minutes if they're doing 'touch and go' pattern work.

Thank you. smile There's nothing else nearby that causes us any concern.

Seriously, 10km........!
That's further away than I currently live from Heathrow and air traffic from there is barely noticeable at that distance away, if not directly under the flightpaths.

I used to live in West Berkshire, and we regularly had noise from planes overhead on departure from Heathrow.

Concorde was particularly noisy on full throttle. smile
