Hi all,
I wonder if the more learned could help me. We are due to fly on Sunday morning froM Luton airport, around 7.30am. Looks like that will coincide with some of the strong winds and rain forecast. I have been googling around but can’t really find anything definitive, what level of weather grounds an airplane ?
I understand taking off into a wind is positive thing, much more lift but side winds are problematic. What do airlines do in this situation, do they warn early of cancellations as a result of weather reports ? My guess is they run in to the last minute which means the inevitable waiting around for hours in airport ?
Thanks in advance

Interestingly I was speaking to a mate about this earlier today. He flies 777s for BA - they were one of the only departures from Heathrow last Sunday as the 777 is rated for higher crosswinds than other aircraft.

I'm on a Flybe Q400 tomorrow - should be interesting! They are allowing all flights booked this weekend to have a data/time change for free. I've changed from an evening to a morning flights to have more chance of making it since I guess the aircraft and crew will get stuck somewhere during the day.

Yes crosswinds are the limitation, generally a 30-40kt crosswind limit dependent on aircraft type, less if the runway is wet giving reduced tyre grip so more change of coming off the runway.

The classic triangle layout meant you could pick the runway best suited to the wind.

EasyJet have already cancelled some early morning flights out of Luton on Sunday due to expected adverse weather conditions.

Feels like an early call to me...

easyJet have cancelled our guests flight from Bristol to Nice tomorrow. Have had to rebook with KLM via Amsterdam as nothing at all available with EJ from anywhere tomorrow.
