Does anyone remember this news story?

A light aircraft could not lower its' undercarriage and to save it the ground staff drove down the runway with someone out the sunroof to 'catch' the plane and free the undercarriage. If I recall correctly the car was an Audi.

I'm sure it happened before the internet but I can find no trace of the story on the net.

Help.

Now you mention it that rings a vague bell. Though I think a wheels up landing would have been safer.

I remember that. Although my vague memory was it was a Sierra with a sun roof not an Audi

Yes, I remember it, the car co - and I think it was german - ran an advert the next day in the paper showing the car being a third wheel in effect...the tag line "For when yuo really do have a plane to catch"

Was that a genuine emergency or a stunt? Seems like there were a lot of cameras around - considering it was 1985.

Let me see, what could possibly go wrong?

Tyre on retracted leg near aircraft centre line. When retracted leg lowers, drag increases, aeroplane drops and slows down, sunroof chappy get a short back and sides and doesn't find counting in Base 10 so easy anymore.

P.S. I had one of those Audis. Now I know why it seemed a bit tired!

Yes a 5000, equivalent to a 200/5T here (but yes, basically a 100).
