Hi all

I’ll start this by saying I know virtually nothing about boats...

In an ideally world in five years or so I’ll be living on an island in sunnier climbs.

My dream is to have a small speed boat and the capability to pilot it myself.

So the question is, what qualifications do I need to be able to do this? Are they international or country specific? If international, any recommendations where in the uk I could take lessons?

Thanks in advance and sorry for lack of knowledge!

I see you're in the South West so plenty of choice to gain an RYA MB qualification both theory and practical boat handling skills.

In the UK no qualifications, licence, insurance or experience of any description required.

Do a EU one .
Brexit might scupper “ 3rd party “ qualifications .
In France particularly the S ,every town / port has Bateau ecoles
A basic “ permit d Mer “ is all you need .
You will need to google it to get the gist .
The EU like many things interchangeably with admin like this .

VHF cert is mandatory too .Although this is more a generic WW thing so a U.K. ( normally a day ) suffices .

As mentioned, an RYA competent crew and day skipper ticket is fun to do, and will give you the basics.

A VHF licence is necessary in the UK, but also simple.

If you get into it, some navigation night school stuff may be fun, but for a little speed boat is less important.

Different countries have different regs, but if you have the first 2, then you should have no problems passing any local tests.

If you do decide to do a day skipper, find a place that does it with motor / power boats rather than sail boats, as that aligns with your interests more.

Actually, just had a look as its been donkeys years since i thought about RYA courses ... they do this now which looks like spot on for you.

With the added bonus of playing with a RIB rather than being a WAFI for the weekend if thats more your thing smile

I decided to do the ICC course, which has more recognition if boating abroad than a UK certificate. It can be done in an intensive 4-5 days. Happy boating!
