Wartime Accident
Discussion
I live on the site of a former airfield, RAF/RNAS Donibristle/HMS Merlin. Bits and pieces still remain, parts of runways and some buildings.
Recently I picked up the card below, which looks like an official RAF product, a 1936 Christmas card, from 22 Bomber Squadron, which were flying Vickers Vildebeests at that time and of course post war took on the RAF's SAR role.

I've done some digging to see what I can find out about the sender, Harold Frank Hoare. The address on the envelope in Herne Bay still exists. According to rafweb he was still serving age 46 in the RAFVR with No 71 MU and was killed on 9th June 1944 when Wellington X, HE854 of No 26 OTU crashed and burst into flames into a hanger at Wing shortly after taking off from a night flying test. 3 others including a WAAF also perished.
Does anyone have any idea where I can find more details about the accident?
