Fascinating article. Scary to think quite how close we came, on more than one occasion.

I grew up with the spectre of nuclear war between the superpowers. US jets flew over my school daily. Lightnings intercepted Bears. But the generation before me had got through WW2 and weren't too worried, so neither were we. 'MAD' worked. We knew the enemy and where he was, and vice versa. Now of course it's all turned to a mush of 'terrorism' and random nutters.

There was a Channel 4 documentary on this a few years ago, wonder if it's on Youtube?

Great article!

Excellent read.

Actually become aware of this from a wiki article that I read a little while ago. This man deserves the noble peace prize, much more than a lot of other recipients!

I know precious little about my uncle - Sqn Leader Reginald Taylor. He was on Blehiems in the war, but in Maggie’s reign used to get a phone call from Whitehall (I think) at any time day or night. He’d then spend up to 3 months at a time in the Belgium Cold War Bunkers when things got hot as the guy on the other end of the phone to Maggie ready to press the button. I only found this out after his death from his wife, my auntie and my dad’s sister. Never been able to find anything about it other than what she told us, so still unable to confirm if this was the case.

Are you sure about that? Would the HQ at Northwood not have been more likely? Or is the Belgium bit referring to SHAPE?

All I really know is that he’d disappear to Belgium in the bunkers for months on end. Unfortunately all who may know more have passed.

Yep. My thoughts. There’s nothing out there about him.

Apply to the MoD for his service record, it may give some clues; you'll need your aunt's permission, or the next living relative if she's died.
