I saw a programme very much like that a few years ago, where some police detective bods went out to the area to try to figure out what happened. I think the conclusion was that he'd perished in the desert - but that may have been just handy way to close the case of course...

Reading up on this, all searches seem to be around the Mt St Helens area of Washington state, a very rugged and forested area. I think this is due to the ‘lurch’ that the aircraft made that they assume was made as DBC left the building. What if the lurch was just the stair deploying or moving? Also the stair instruction placard, assumed ripped off by the slipstream, was found in that area.
But the aircraft flew all the way to Reno with the stairway down. He could have jumped anywhere. What if DBC jumped SOUTH of the Columbia River? It was night, and assuming he was not suicidal he would have wanted to identify where he was before he jumped. The first large landmark identifiable at night would be the city of Portland, Oregon. So if he jumped when he was near the city, he would have a much better chance of survival. And it would account for some cash being found in the Columbia River (it flows north west, and its watershed determines the likely landing area).
My theory - he was an experienced parachutist and a Boeing employee or ex employee. Jumped in the Pacific Northwest because that is the area he was familiar with. But south of the Columbia.

There was a programme about DB Cooper on Discovery called Mission Declassified.
Their conclusion was that it was this guy:

I love the fact that he flew a helicopter while it was being used in the search for him Their conclusion was that it was this guy:

TV Show Leverage did a cover of the DB Cooper story, massively romanticised and not very accurate but one of their better episodes.
