I watched this on the Disney+, National Geographic channel last night. I think it was only released recently. Basically original newsreel footage, NASA films and interviews with the astronauts and Tom Wolfe, covering the Mercury project. Some of the scenes are the exact ones portrayed in the 1983 film, but the real thing.

It's about 90 minutes, and I was glued to the telly for the duration. Absolutely brilliant - very much along the lines of the recent "Apollo 11" film. Some of the re-mastered film is like current quality.

Not to be confused with "The Right Stuff", also on Disney+, which is absolute ste.

It’s good. Enjoying it. Doesn’t paint a very positive picture of John Glenn though......

A bit harsh – it was nominated for eight Oscars and won four.

Why not? I thought it portrayed him as simply being more articulate and savvy than the others, over and above the leadership, technical and piloting prowess that was the baseline selection critera.

Obviously editing is important, but it's way better to hear him in speak in person, and actually witness the various press conferences, than to rely on some dramatised agenda IMO.

Are you getting mixed up with the dramatised version that's also on that channel?

Ha ha I really, really, really doubt that.

The original 1983 film of the book was way, way better than this latest serialised thing, which somehow manages to eliminate Chuck Yeager (the Right Stuff personified) altogether, and make the whole thing seem very boring.

Ah – I thought you were talking about the 1983 film.

Yes, I must be confused. It’s the Nat Geo dramatised series I’ve been watching. I’m enjoying it, just as I enjoyed the film & book.

Love this kind of content.

I thought that the 1983 movie portrayed Glenn in a pretty good light - especially when he refused to acquiesce to Johnson's demands to see Glenn's wife personally after one of Glenn's launch scrubbs.
I understand that this was pretty accurate.

The 1983 is not, however, 100% correct (in fact, it's way off is some areas) but I do love it despite its flaws.

It's the other "Right Stuff" (2020 Disney series) that I think was being discussed as portraying Glenn in a bad light. IMO it's basically a pretty dull and unecessary re-make of the 1983 film, cutting out the sound barrier and test pilot aspects, with poor CGI replacing real aircraft into the bargain (OK some of the original film effects were a bit sketchy, but the F-104 sequences at the end are great).

It's confusing because there are there things being discussed:

1983 film "The Right Stuff"

2020 serialised thing "The Right Stuff" (Disney+)

2020 documentary "The Real Right Stuff" (National Geographic)

And to make it even more confusing, there's the original Tom Wolfe book - which is the basis of all these film and TV derivatives. I still love the book too.

Tom Wolfe appears in the new film, again in old interviews, which are edited in as a kind of narration. It all ties in really well - at least I think it does. Some of the film hasn’t been seen previously, and I doubt many of the news items have been seen since they were first broadcast.

Sounds good.

I did have a look but it's not available at the moment on any of the catchup platforms I can access. I'm sure it will come around again on Nat Geo.

Now watched “the real right stuff”. Nothing I hadn’t seen or known before but enjoyable nevertheless.

I thought the last part of it was really curtailed, so much so I thought it was a part 1.

I’m really liking the serialisation on Disney+. That’s well worth a watch.

I’d agree with that.
