Today I took a day time internal flight in China, Chongqing to Wuxi. Sometime while I was asleep all the blinds were closed. I woke up about 30 minutes before landing and opened my blind because I like looking out of the window, within a few minutes I was told the blind had to be closed. We landed with all blinds closed.
I have flown many many times everywhere but never had a take off or landing where they have not insisted that all blinds are fully open.
Any idea what was different today?

That’s strange - I always thought that blinds were up on take off and landing so if there was an emergency your eyes were adjusted to the right light.

I don’t have an answer - but I’m sure someone will!

Is it because it’s also a military airfield?

I thought blinds open so emergency services can see into the plane

Same here

You can see a hazard if they are open.

Mind you, in China it would be to stop you seeing something you were not meant too.

its an odd place, found it more restrictive than Russia (though in Russia we did get our own FSK minder but he was pissed all the time so it didn't matter and he didn't even come into the Reactor building)

Work smile

Doubled my dose in one day on an RBMK compared to the previous 17 years on an AGR in the UK.

Probably shouldn't have spent so much time staring at the pretty lights in the cooling ponds wobble

It's not unusual in 3rd world airports with combined civil/military operations.

Bahir Dar in Ethiopia springs immediately to mind.

Possibly to stop you seeing one of these bad boys ...

According to the internet, the 77th Regiment, 26th Special Missions Aircraft Division is based at WUX.

Yeah, closing the blind would stop you seeing that aircraft

You also sometimes get this instruction at some combined civil/military Indian airfields. A bit daft really, since you can look where you like on the way to/from the aircraft or whilst in the terminal. I always find a good vantage point to watch the military activities when waiting to board. Sights at the airports I frequent include Su-30, il 76, An-32, MiG 21 Bis, C17 and the odd Jaguar. My favourite moment was waiting at the end of the runway in the twilight for a group of Su-30s to take off in front of us at Pune. Reheat and plenty of noise.

I was once on approach to either Delhi or Mumbai in a Jet Airways 777, I was heading to the front central loo in 1st class by the cockpit and when I walked past to cockpit door was open so obviously I had a look in. The pilots had all the cockpit windows covered in what at a quick glance looked like hessian sacks?!? I assume this was to block the morning sun but I was still a bit surprised to see them flying entirely blind even if obviously flying IFR.

Strange a country of China's capability and secrecy would share airport facilities? Not exactly hard to pave a runway is it?

Mind I saw an f-15 at las Vegas airport once... Perhaps he got lost trying to find nellis.
