I believe these came up at auction a couple of weeks or so ago with crazy estimates and received few if any bids.

I know a few guys who know about these things from a restoration viewpoint.

'Money pits' is the term they use.

Unless you're a bored millionaire, forget it.

Hanson's Auctioneers, that's that blur of manic activity from Bargain Hunt, Charles Hanson.

Stupid question - why are they such a money pit? If everything is in there and the restoration has no intention of getting things working properly again surely it's a matter of taking it all to bits, cleaning it up, giving it a coat of paint and putting it together again? Obviously it's not that simple as people who know what they're doing say it costs money, but I'm not sure what the money would be spent on.

For some reason I fine amputated cockpits incredibly depressing. No idea why.

In fact any decayed aircraft fills me with a sense of hopelessness. I don't get the same feeling with classic cars left to rust, or old steam engines.

Corrosion. And if you don’t sort it, you lose it. Remember, these aircraft weren’t designed to last 60 years! There’ll be corrosion in many areas that will, if you want to do it properly, cost a fortune. It’s a shame, but that’s the way it is.

What could you/would you do with it? Aside from a museum, who else is going to want one, let along have £30k+ to spaff on something to sit in?

I get they are "rare" but so are lots of things from the 1960's...

I suppose a buyer would want to take one of these on a trailer to shows. I know someone who has an ex-army Lynx in their garden that they love taking to shows. It’s a social thing, and helps create a bit of interest. No, I couldn’t be bothered, but I’m glad some can be.

Ah, it's something to do. A lot of owners get a bit bored of them once they've done all the restoration work, mind.

These particular cockpits are massively overvalued; the owner has not worked on them to any genuine extent, just collected bits and put them in a pile. He's threatened to scrap them if they don't sell, which has provoked some mirth in the aviation world. Their scrap value is a fraction of their market value, which is a fraction of what he wants.
