It is what huge power and speed will get you.

8 nuclear reactors, 4 shafts and 280,000 shp.

Not with planes and troops aboard.

It can do it if needed but if you can get within 10 miles of a fully loaded carrier to make it need to do that I would be suprised.

We managed to get a whole 7 deg of ‘roll’ out of HMS PWLS and that was really provoking it in some very big seas!

That looks like the USS Abraham Lincoln which is a Nimitz class carrier so 2 reactors and about 260,000 shp.

The USS Enterprise was the only carrier to have 8 reactors.

I have done doughnuts in a frigate, at 28 knots they are quite agile...

sadly, didn't warn the crew who hadn’t stowed for heavy seas, so the manoeuvre emptied most of the drawers on the ship!

Interesting demonstration of the US Navy’s definition of the difference between ships and boats.

Boats lean into the corner. Ships lean out.

Proceeds to draw enormous cock and balls visible from space with the ship's wake.

Theres a difference between 1 plane lashed to the deck with no crew beside it and a full compliment of planes, helicopters and crew operating on deck.

I'm sure I read somewhere how a US carrier, possibly USS Carl Vinson, lost some aircraft over the side once when doing a sudden, sharp turn, but I can't find anything about it now.

That’ll be Maverick’s plane. Only Tom Cruise has the flying talent to land on an aircraft carrier manoeuvring like that. Awesome.

I've always wondered what causes the lean. Is it simply where the CoG is relative to the waterline?

It's amazing how these big boats can shift when needed.

Are they obliged to display a plane on deck at all times, to prevent potential pedantry?

You don't want a plane sliding off the deck when you turn and go back for the skier - as pictured here.

HMS Invincible lost a Sea Harrier over the side during the Falklands War during a high speed turn.

From Sea Harrier over the Falklands by Sharkey Ward:

“Mike was sitting on deck behind Paul’s Jet down aft. Both were burning and turning, on the centre-line and ready for launch - so the deck chains had been taken off. It’s wet on the deck and you know how slippery it has become recently - like a bloody ice-rink. The ship was in a hard turn to starboard at a fairly high speed and so she was heeling to port quite markedly. There was also a 40-knot wind over the deck from starboard, and the deck was heaving up and down badly in the heavy sea. The ship lurched strongly against the sea when without warning the nose of Mike’s aircraft swung to the left through 90 degrees, and in spite of the brakes she slid gracefully over the side. He could do absolutely nothing about it and ejected as the nose dropped. He was picked up by the SAR helicopter in less than two minutes!”

Later that day:

“When the briefing was over, we invited JJ [CO HMS Invincible] to the wardroom for a quick drink with the boys and he accepted with pleasure. Robin Kent, Ralph Wykes-Snead and others welcomed the Captain and we all relaxed and discussed the events of the day. JJ was obviously enjoying his short break from the bridge and the Ops Rooms when Dave Braithwaite sauntered over from the bar. At that moment we were chatting about the SHAR going over the side. Suddenly Dave came out with one of the classic lines of the war. Without a by your leave, he looked JJ square in the eye and, in totally inappropriate AWI [Air Warfare Instructor - think TOPGUN] fashion, bullishly said, ‘That’ll teach you to treat this ship like a ****ing speedboat, eh, Sir?’ He was rapidly removed by the Senior Pilot, and when he had gone the Captain had a good laugh.”

Think I’ve spotted their Achilles Heel. Only one small gun protecting the rear ! Hope no hostile forces have picked up on that shoot
