Intrigued as to why there's no guard rails around the foc'stle area, forrad of the gun?

Every warship I was on had guards all the way round the ship, in my day.

It's not really the fo'c'sle though, that's enclosed, one deck below.

There's never any need for anyone to be standing there, so there are no stanchions and netting/webbing.

Nice pics.

I've never noticed the two-tone paint job on T45s before, what's that all about?

My semaphore skills aren't up to much, but is that someone on deck making the international standard "I Am A Teapot" signal?

There is a hatch right at the very pointy bit to access the outside from the lower deck, bit it's not big and they really don't like people out there when at sea!

Reduces radar return.

The shell is painted grey, the decks have a coating on them, and the black stuff is RAM, radar absorbent material. As I understand it, it's not there for stealth purposes, as such, i.e. reducing RCS, it's more to stop the LRR (the big radar on the back) cooking anyone inside the foremast over time.

And it lands on the deck right above the bower anchor hawser, it's really only for escape and evac, it'll very rarely be used.

The hatch was there primarily to access the jackstaff and for escape. If access is needed to the deck over the covered focsle then it was intended that lifelines would be used. The area just for’d of the breakwater at the outboard ends is still protected by the guardrails and it is in this ‘enclosed’ triangle space that the lifelines could be safely clipped on to.

I have not seen what was actually fitted to the ships and how the crew use it.

Yes, two-tone grey; grey-grey and blue-grey.

Here is Dragon in all grey-grey (and all the smarter for it) for comparison. Just curious

I think that dragon is the tackiest looking thing I've ever seen on a warship.

We watched them putting it on, and assumed it was just there for the launch and they'd take it back off.

Have you not seen the big painting of Peter Duncan on the bow of HMS Duncan?

One of my old colleagues, now retired, and a very experienced naval architect, happened to have the same first name as me.

A scottish one, that begins with D.

He was also very eccentric, and sent a letter to someone rather important, suggesting that they should change Duncan's name to ours.

Unsurprisingly, he didn't receive a response.

I wondered why grey and duck egg blue as well; to make it look pretty? ran out of grey paint?

Modern warships are not my interest really but I think Dragon looks quite smart and I like the painted Dragon- although it makes it look like a model with a transfer on the hull!

Perhaps she would be Wales' share of the Royal Navy in the event of Welsh independence....l
