Just wondering, if I found or assisted an inbound or deserted rhib could I claim LOF, establish a debt against the vessel and in the absence of an owner/master end up with a freebie. Just need to get a line on it.
Any thoughts on this
If you assist any craft carrying potential migrants - whether in distress or not - you're going to have an awful lot of explaining to do and are leaving yourself open to potential prosecution. Any thoughts on this
The official advice for leisure sailors should you encounter potential migrants is to stand well off to prevent them from boarding your own boat and inform the Coastguard of numbers, position and course.
People in distress or in the water or finding an empty craft warrants an immediate Mayday call.

You are not going to be prosecuted for saving a life at sea. As a master of a vessel you are obligated to assist a vessel in distress. If they are in life threatening situation and you are capable of helping, to deliberately not help would be illegal.
Sure if theres hundreds in the water and they are trying to swamp your 20ft yacht, you can leave them to save your own bacon but you are still obligated to make the appropriate distress call and help where you can.
I would put money on there being no chance of a successful prosecution if you drag drowning immigrants out the water saving their lives as long as you take them to the authorities. If you took them to port and set them free, you might be in the s
t then.

In the real world I'd put money on any threat of action against you being laughed out of court too and yes, nobody should even contemplate leaving anyone in the water to drown and if the situation arose then of course you'd assist anyway you could.
