Just now, (22:10) heading very slowly east from Chesterfield towards Worksop.

Too high to be the police helicopter. Nothing showing on flightradar.

Any ideas? Can anyone else local, (east of north Chesterfield) see it?

Travelling far too slowly for a meteorite I’d suggest.

Which of the 7 ish dots are we talking about?

Could be the international space station.

There is an app you can download for you phone and point at the sky and it tells you what you are looking at. Works for stars but not sure if it does satellites or space stations.

The large ‘v’ shaped object just above the fence line in the middle of the shot.

We have the ISS app on our phone with alerts set up for close and clear passes, and I’ve seen the ISS and the Chinese equivalent many times. It wasn’t either of those.

I was naively hoping for some genuine and serious replies.

Maybe I should have posted this in the science section instead.

Was there Anything on ADSB Exchange? It looks like some of the photos I’ve seen of rocket launches, but it’s not likely to be that coming over the UK.

A vapour trail from a military aircraft fanning out behind more than usual?

Didn’t nasa send a new satellite up earlier? It’s a new one to observe the earth warming etc

Thank you both. How would one find out if it was a rocket?

It launched hours ago. It would have been out of the atmosphere by a couple of hours. You’d never see one over the UK like that if it launched from the US as this one did. We are way too far away to observe the first and second stage in the atmosphere; by a couple of thousand miles.

Could it have been an aircraft at high altitude dumping fuel?

Edit: Search “UFO UK” on twitter and it was spotted all over the country.

Got any more details? Launch site and a time?
This is the most likely type of object to create this effect. Definitely not a low flying helo.

53 mins ago I think
Nope it launched at 7:12pm BST. It is not that rocket.

EDIT: Unless it was the 2nd stage burning up on re-entry. The actual satellite was deployed 1hr 40 before the OPs photo.

Flight Radar was the first thing I checked.

It looked far too high to be a helicopter. The South Yorkshire police helicopter is on a training job out towards Wales tonight with a load of other Forces helicopters.

The Augusta helicopter you mentioned was travelling south and was already a fair distance south and revealing south of my location at the time I spotted whatever that thing was, (it was over Nottingham and I’m north Chesterfield). Also what I saw was travelling East.

I also wondered if it was a commercial airliner with its lights on coming in to land, but there are no airports east of us, only Doncaster to the North and East-Mids and Nottingham airports to the south of us. Again, this object was travelling East.

Whatever it was it was really, really high. Probably even satellite high and it seemed to disappear over the horizon as opposed to fade out of view.
