Edwards AFB airshow this weekend
Discussion
It might be a bit of a trek for some of you, but I'll be heading up to Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert on Saturday. They're having a show on the 15th and 16th featuring flights from much of the USAF and NASA fleet and a promise of low-level supersonic passes for the first time at a show this year.
I'll be riding up from LA through the desert on my R1100S on Saturday, while I'll be telling myself I look exactly like Maverick on his bike.
Naturally, photos will follow.

I’m on holiday in San Diego right now, but won’t be this weekend. Damn it! Looking forward to the pictures.
Hopefully you've managed to get your aviation fix at the Midway! As an aside, if you haven't eaten at Ironside Fish yet, it's my standard recommendation for San Diego.NNH said:

Maverick had a Kawasaki and he wasn't in the Mojave, it was Oceanside, but apart from that - have a great timeI'll be riding up from LA through the desert on my R1100S on Saturday, while I'll be telling myself I look exactly like Maverick on his bike.

Instead I went today (Sunday), and had a most excellent time. The show kicked off with people jumping out of a fully operational aircraft, but they did have nice flags. This was also when I started my day-long fight with autofocus, which had real trouble with small objects in the sky. I usually take pictures at race tracks, so this was an unexpected issue. For anyone interested, I used a Canon 760D and a Sigma 18-200mm IS.

The other starting attraction was my first sonic boom, thanks to an F-22 going supersonic at 40,000 feet. They'd worked out the timing so the announcer could say "And you'll be hearing it right now" ... BOOM BOOM. NASA responded later in the day with two different booms from an F-15 and FA-18, so I think we'll give NASA the win.
The morning ride out was cool and lovely as the desert slowly warmed up. The USAF were very efficient, with personnel and cones at every intersection of the 20 mile ride from the main road, past dry lake beds. Parking was actually on a lake bed, and the USAF parking attendant obviously saw me carefully checking if my kickstand was secure and told me "Don't worry, we land aircraft on this".

Study all the focus modes in the manual and see which one is best for the task. Also, at the long end that lens is only f6.3, which can hinder AF unless the light is good.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
