What ww2 aircraft would you have preferred to fly in combat
Discussion
Following on from the other recent threads about ww2 aircraft ,given the choice as a pilot from any air force, what would you have preferred to fly?
Somewhat difficult question as many aircraft were used in different roles in different theatres.
For me I quite fancy a Mossie ,in Europe doing precision raids.
Sod anything against the Japs because of the fear of capture/death

P38 over the pacific or P51s in Europe.
But a spitfire in the Battle of Britain would probably be the ultimate war event to be involved in and survive.
For sure, but For the purpose of this thread your survival isn’t guaranteed-you have to factor that into your choice But a spitfire in the Battle of Britain would probably be the ultimate war event to be involved in and survive.

LEAST favourite might be a brewster buffalo in the Far East or a fairy swordfish attacking the German fleet in the Channel Dash https://www.manstonhistory.org.uk/channel-dash-bra...
Night after night or daylight bombing missions into Germany wouldn’t have been that fun either tbh.

I think for the work they did, their mission profile & the chances of survival PR Mosquito would be my choice.
PR.XIX Spitfire second.
Agreed. Just keep an eye out for those special high altitude Fw190s they developed just to get you...PR.XIX Spitfire second.
Only PR Mossie loss, IIRC, was actually the first alleged loss of an allied aircraft to a Me262, although, its a technical loss, as it only damaged the Mossie which succeeded in evading the 262 and got back to its Italian base, but crashed on landing due to the damage caused by the 262.
The PR crews were very special going out unarmed over enemy territory as they did, as were those fearless Lysander pilots dropping SOE agents etc into fields at night in enemy occupied territory.
It would be a Mossie pilot for me as well, just a fabulous aircraft, maybe one of those Banff anti-shipping strike wings perhaps.
