One has to wonder how many things have failed here for this it happen. Even IF their assets were badly tracked in a spreadsheet where a line was deleted, or similar.....
- Did the airworthiness and/or insurance certification renewal not trigger a search for a supposedly non existent airframe?
- Did scheduled maintenance and allocated parts not roll around to an empty gap in the schedule?
- Did air or ground crews not ask why they'd left a plane parked so far out of the way?
- Did the airport not think to ask the airline when they planned to move that plane which had loitered for ages and racked up a fortune in fees?

Its an old -200 model. It was probably end of life and the forgot to dispose of it.
