I just heard this strange noise and a Osprey flew low over my garden in the last 10 minutes - props in level flight mode.

I'm only 3-4 miles from Carlisle airport so is there an exercise going on?

Probably just a normal training sortie out of Mildenhall for one of the 352nd SOW CV-22's. They can usually be seen stooging around the remote areas of the lakes and Scotland and, as well as local to East Anglia.

They call into Manchester City Airport (Barton) regularly for re-fuelling on those sortees too

It came past again 45 mins later so seems to be doing something local rather than just passing through.

...I also heard some fast jet activity in the area this afternoon but they were out of sight.

Carlisle airport/Spadeadam is often used as a training/exercise base by various militaries (the Dutch come a few times a year) hence wondering if there's some sort of exercise going off

Spadeadam really is an epic training area and full of interesting history.
