Interesting - ‘big’ gun surface ships, 10 to 25 in number. Pie in the sky?

The Democrats will be in power before any are finished so they'll have to want them too. 'Biden Class' anyone?

It seems to be the actions of a narcist, desperate to have their 'brand' stuck on anything and everything.

To do so whilst still in the 'hotseat', speak of hubris at the highest level.

Isn't that the exact definition of the man?

How are drones going to get hundreds of miles out to sea, and what makes them better than missiles? Directed energy weapons will make light work of slow fragile drones let alone existing CIWS.

Same with subs. What makes a sub with drones any more capable than a sub with torpedos?

Hypersonics are over rated. Blinded by their own plasma on the atmosphere, and not easy to manoeuvre towards a moving target.

Ukraine conflict has shown how short the development cycle for drones has become. The future is probably more the spectacularly effective Zelenski class than a Trump class aircraft carrier.

They have a short development cycle because they are simple. That also makes them slow, short range and vulnerable.

Imagine how good a "drone" would be against a ship if it was long range, fast, stealthy and packed a big punch. We could call them missiles smile

Slow, cheap and short range. But in quantity.1,000 of them. With a couple of 'proper' missiles hiding among them.

The term these days is One Way Attack Drones, and the difference between them and missiles didn't seem to be that big. The point is that they're cheap, they don't send one, they send dozens.

How do they get close in the first place? Cheap means limited range, as does the reliance on fibre optics to avoid jamming. If they did get through what enables them to resist armour piercing rounds, or directed energy weapons?

He's been watching Under Siege, hasn't he?

Who wouldn't want a main battleship to play with, especially if you aren't personally picking up the tab?

A long range, fast, sophisticated anti-ship "drone" is a missile. We can already defend against missile attacks.

tbf... it's pretty useful for the US. their primary use for all these things are big phallic bits of military kit to impose their will on weaker 3rd world countries so it's pretty much well in line with their usual modus operandi I suppose....

Shahed drones have a range of about 2500km. yes they're slower and easier to shoot down than a supersonic missile, but for the cost of one Onyx, they can send dozens of Shaheds

(edited for dumb autocorrect).

This isn't a politics thread.

I'll be interested to see the actual specifications before taking a view on its value.

Not with fiber optics, so you're back to being jammed because they are cheap and unsophisticated. Then you have the multi layered defences designed for far more advanced weapons, before finally getting to CIWS which would shed them with a few dozens of rounds.

It would also be interesting to hear how they are supposed to find the ship(s) in the first place.

Its just a distraction for Trump. Promise him a battleship with his name on it and that he can play designer and he's happy.

Theres a reason nobody has battleships anymore, so I can't see any value. It actually looks more like a destroyer anyway.
