Guys

I posted this to the business section as I thought it might have a good chance of being answered there, but as it's boat related let's try here too!

"Nothing to do with business, but I am building a sailing boat and I need to import some carbon fibre tube and some boat components into the UK from New Zealand, about £1400 worth.

Apparently, it's hit or miss when it comes to this type of thing, for example someone I know who did something similar a while ago says that if you import "sails" you pay tax on them, if it's "sailcloth" ot "tarpaulin" you don't. Apparently it's critical what is actually writeen down on the paperwork.

I need to import lengths of carbon fibre tube, a daggerboard (like a smal keel for a dinghy, again carbon fibre) and some bits of rigging (boom and spreaders). Can anyone give me any tips on what to get written on the ticket to minimise tax?

Thanks in advance!"

'Commercial samples, no value' is one I hear used by other people. Not me.

They do tend to be a bit heavy on consumables, like masts, sails, hulls, and things.laugh

The supplying company will be requested to list the contents, so it is unlikely they will write "worthless boat parts - a gift for our long lost nephew in the UK" since it is their declaration and their signature.

OK for small packets, but it sounds like you're bringing in a fair sized load.

Also, remember if the declared value is peanuts, then any insurance cover whilst in transit is also peanuts.

I'm thinking it may be worth having to pay some tax as even if you declare it worthless you're gonna need some insurance on it anyway...

Got a reeeallly pretty repaired and only "slighly kinked" RS mast on Taking Liberties you can have. I do you good price my friend.. It's about time my crew bought me a new one as he tries to snap it every time we crash. hehe

BTW hello Iain wavey
