Not cheap

Note the collar round the mast holding the Kicker/halyard blocks ripped out ,and slid up until it stopped at the storm sail track.

Yep, total cost was about 600,00 Euro.Lots of damage to rigging, mast off, interior allsorts chaos.I was at the mast about to put the reef in when it went pear shaped, oh course its always at about 3am, black night and lumpy.

The place it has failed looks like the same sort of position down the boom as the Volvo 70's e.g. Puma in the last leg when they had a third reef in.

I wonder if the designers are specifying enough carbon fibre material in these area where there must be significant shear loads imparted on the boom?

As least the boom is high and everyones heads are still on their shoulders. hehe

Owner was on the helm. Not one gybe but 3 in succession. Mainsheet is on a captive winch below deck, which is the aft sheet running through the collar ( all white). When the collar went up it came down sideways jamming the mainsheet as the holes where passes through the collar and deck where out of alignment. So one free swinging boom as we tried to drop the main. As i climbed up the stick to the goose-neck the rigging had stretched so much it was like being on the worlds biggest pogo stick. We did think it was about to fall over.

Ouch.

Lucky nobody was hurt!

Would it have been possible to have rigged a preventer?

Nort really as we where beam reaching and needed to reef the owner took the helm off the 1st mate and ran off down wind while the rest of boys came up on deck to keep the boat flat only for a few mins. He just lost all idea where the wind was and gybed.
