Going on my jollies in a few weeks, which got me wondering how someone ships and creates a beach on a resort?.
The volume of sand to create a beach must be immense, and why don't they simply get washed away?
hmmmmmm !!!

Those wooden breakers are used so the sand doesn't wash away.

Otherwise look at Barcelona the beach there was made for the Olympics.

Not really a beach, but its how the made the islands in Dubai.

Watched a programme on it a while back, pretty good, and an amazing feat of engineering

They just dump a load of truck loads of sand on the beach at Lloret de Mar at the end of each season.

They do get washed away, or some do, and constantly have to be renewed.

I think the Yanks have to do that quite a lot.

It works like this.

Lets take the south coast as an example. Waves don't hit the beach end on, they hit at an angle. Because of this they push the sand and stones on the beach sideways down the beach slowly over time. This is called Longshore Drift. If you put long wooden beams called groynes or breakwaters on the beach it stops the sand being able to go sideways so the beach gets longer.

The beach at Santa Eulalia on Ibiza is man made, or at least partially so. I was there about 15 years ago during the Whit break and there was a bloody great tanker anchored offshore, pumping dredged sand onshore. It took a few days and a few tankers, but they extended the beach by about fifteen metres.

I was told they dredged the sand from Formentera, which is where the natural sea currents dump the sand as it washes away again, and create what amounts to a new beach every year. If they get rough weather over the "summer season" it can wipe out most of the beach.
