Stel prices have dropped recently, so the steel itself won't cost a fortune. Check with a steel stockist for the price per metre. You may even find it cheaper to purchase complete lengths (~7.5m), as if the size is not one that they normally stock then they get left with stock they'll be buying and not using.

Whereabouts in the country are you? Paying a skilled fabricator is never cheap. Do you know of any PHers who can weld (properly)? I'm guessing probably £60-70 in labour from a fabricator down south- less up here. Would take an hour to cut, check, tack, check and weld said frame.

It's been a while since I've ordered some steel, but a length 25mm box section (6m long, 1.5mm square) was probably £15 (I've only got an invoice for several bits at the same time, so I'm guessing based on weight what it cost).

So you're looking at probably £20 tops (although I had a £15 delivery charge because my order came to under £150) - might be an idea if you can find someone with that kind of size in stock.

Pity you're quite a way from me; the welding I would've done for (probably) free.

doh' lol smile

its in relation to this : http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

tweaked my design so that it can be mostly bolted together, instead of welded, but the initial chassis will need welding together instead of bolting.

thanks for the guide pricing though, sounds much better than i was expecting smile

D'oh from me too - it would've been quite fun to have made something like that!

Note that the price may depend on thickness; 1.5mm isn't very thick - although I'm sure for your purposes, it's fine.

i guess its best that i do learn to weld, as once ive made this one, and figured out the engineering to get it working exactly as i want. i'll have 3more full size for a couple friends and 2 smaller ones for my kids to build.

...sould be fun biggrin

Mild steel I'm assuming? Unless I'm being an imbecile and missed the material in a post somewhere...

50X30X3.2MM RHS (Rectangular hollow section) is roughly £30 a length up North at the minute (6m Length)

Fabrication, probably about £20/hr at a proper place.. maybe 2-3hrs total to make a simple box...
