2009 Harrier Display cancelled and Typhoon Displays cut
Discussion
As it says on the attached thread.
Harrier from 20R Sqn was due to do a demo (not a full display)at a number of Airshows this year.
This has now been cancelled due to operational reasons.
The Typhoon Display has been cancelled from a number of weekday airshows, no reason given as yet.
This comes after the announcement earlier this year that the Role Demo that features Tornado's, Hawks, and E3 Sentry was cancelled for 2009 aswell.
This just leaves the following solo fixed wing displays
Typhoon - reduced number of displays
Tutor
King Air
Hawk
Seems like airshows are being hit by the credit crunch/defence cutbacks

Hey hum
Vulcan.... Skint
Harriers.... Grounded
No Role Demo
And reduced Typhoon displays.
Babies crying and kids staring at fast jets making their ears bleed are not long for this world.
Instead we'll have kids joining the RAF for pleasure flights around Bowness and Windermere in a Tiger Cub
What better way of recruiting than plying your target audience with bags of posters etc. as the pin up is flying overhead?

Feck me, are we really that short of aircraft that we can't do PR anymore? The forces are screaming out for new blood and the best way, surely, is to get the kit out and about showing off. Shame we don't have the US forces attitude of "the tax payer has paid for it, therefore they should see it". Which is why most of their bases have open days the the public can get close to what they've bought.

Even the US have "postponed" the displays at Mildenahll for several years now. The UK is broke and it just doesn't have the money, manpower, kit, or flying hours/ fatigue life to display things as it used to. Sadly.
Yeah, but Mildenhall is due to operations. On the mainland US they don't seem to cancel open days.Considering UK forces are currently 30billion in the red, and when the savings errrr I mean "efficiency policies" were presented to the Treasury to be greeted with a resounding "f*ck off and try again, and this time actually try". You can see why air displays are low priority and the early wind down of F3's are on going.

UK QRA(N)and Falklands (4 ac) support with a total of 12 ac. What a fekin disgrace, but apart from those who care, does anyone else know??

ps: Falklands commitment is till Sept 09 then the 4 F3's will be trailed home as we are too busy to go down and Southern Cross them, 2 ac are on QRA (N)with airframes yet to be allocated.
There will be no Harrier display from BAE Systems. Very rarely do they display aircraft, although they did a Nimrod MRA4 demo at Fairford a few years back.
Only chance you have of seeing a Harrier is in the Royal Navy Flypasts at Yeovilton, RIAT (Fairford) and Culdrose when two will be taking part.
The RAF one is now showing as cancelled at RIAT.
The only Typhoon display in the UK is the RAF one.

RIAT is still missing some of the big hitters of previous years.
Vulcan will be there and the Fly Navy 100 (Full) Flypast.
B1 still to confirm flying.
There is a bit of duplication in the display programme with 3x F18 displays, 2x F16 displays and 2x Gripen displays IIRC.
Yeovilton, although smaller, looks like it could be a good alternative. I don't know whether I can face the hassle of RIAT, getting advanced tickets, queuing throguh security and all the hassle to see a long line of F-16s.
I just want them to get some F-4s, German & Turkish specials would be very nice. That would convince me to go

I'll be very chuffed if the Vulcan makes it. I was really looking forward to seeing the F-22 last year, saw from a distance at Farnborough and it was hugely impressive the things it could do.I get corporate tickets to RIAT, so it's generally a good deal and a good day out, having the Red Arrows in our enclosure is nice too, especially for my missus!
