I'm flying a lot out of Birmingham recently on flybe.
They have a habit of flying Embraer planes. Flew on a Embraer 195 today to glasgow. Now given it's a budget airline. I had plenty of leg room and it generally felt a nice place to be.
Are they "up and coming" as it were. It's not exactly a name you hear a lot as a member of the public.
Mind you I flew back on a Q400 Dash8.... :shudder:

Embraer have actually been around quite a long time - since the late 1960s.
Their first main production aircraft was the twin turboprop EMB 110 Banderiante followed by the EMB 120 Brasilia. They were both small feederliners. With Brazilian government support, they have expanded into small medium range jet airliners and biz jets. The 190 family is their latest offering is quite an impressive line of aircraft.
I always think that Brazil has stepped into the gap left by the demise of the UK civilian jet industry.

To be honest, outside of Boeing, for many years making airliners has never really been a profitable activity. That's why BAe pulled out of the game. Most airliner projects have required some state assistance (it can be argued that even Boeing have benefitted from this indirectly). Certainly Airbus still do and the British manufacturers needed it in the past.
Embraer have been helped in this way so far. With governments having to cut back, maybe they will find it difficult.

I read recently they're in financial trouble?
I hope not. Given the choice of the 195 or a 737 run by a budget carrier. I have to say I'd plump for the 195. It really was a sit down and go "Oh wow I have leg room" and it just felt "spacy".I presume they have an OK safety record..... Brazil is hardly known for it's high tech etc...
