How about a 'mystery aircraft' thread? No Prizes - just for fun! Rules could be:

No models,

Aircraft must have flown at least once.

No, it didn't:

Assuming the balloon is about 2m diameter x 4m long, that gives a volume of approx. 12,570 litres.

Hydrogen gives about 1.1g of lift per litre (Helium gives even less), so that balloon would give around 13.7kg of lift.

It is having to lift probably 10 times that figure.

In summary: It never flew.

D looks like it is US Navy colours rather than USAF, so I think it is something like an F8 or A7. Trying to think what else has that much space below the canopy.
