Vulcan at Raf St Athan in the 80s

I used to love looking around the Vulcan that was parked outside the museum at Raf St Athan in the late 80s, does anybody know which airframe it was ,and what eventualy happened to it

I remember at the time it was sold for around £36,000 and was going to be used as a theme diner but I never heard any more

It also used to be very sad watching the airport fire brigade using the Victors for fire practice over on the scrap yard area

Where were the diners going to sit in a Vulcan?

under the wings apparently, it was going to be fully glazed from the wing down to the ground according to an article in the local paper at the time

This bit from Thunder & Lightnings website ----> "The co-pilot's seat has been removed to ease access for visitors and lots of the rear crew's instruments are missing but otherwise the interior is in good condition. She's currently being used as a travelling exhibit by Vulcan To The Sky to drum up support for the XH558 Return to Flight project, and is stored outside at Bruntingthorpe in between her travels. Information current as of 20/10/2007."

There was a Vulcan at T'athan?! Shame it's not anymore, that's local to me now. Is that the cockpit that's now at Newark Air Museum?

I used to go to St Athans Battle of Britain at home days in the 1970's, they were great air shows. The crowd line was right next to all the scrapped victors, and despite the warning signs I sneaked under the rope and climbed into the doorway of one, it was a really sad sight!
Later on I used to go there on visits with the Air cadets, and we'd get to look around the Vulcans that were having major servicings done there, I think at the time I could stand up in the intake of the Vulcan!

BBC covered the 1983 RAF St Athan at Home day in 1983 (one of the last). It was hosted, as ever, by Raymond Baxter. I have it on video tape.

I visited the RAF reserve collection that was held there in 1988. Most of the collection has since been moved to Cosford.

was at st athen for a.t.c camp in 88 or 89 and had the group photo taken in front of a vulcan. next time i go down to see my mom i will scan it and post it here.

I was at St Athan on Monday, apparently nothing flies in or out of there any more. Britten-Norman had a facility there and the VC10s used to pop in for a service but all's quiet now...
There's a lot of trades training, that's about it.

I remember that ... went there once on a display / open day ...Believe the Vulcan flew on that occasion too. With the Army Cadets, we were allowed to get inside and up close to it.

Incidently, There may be a few things flying at ST. Athens in the near future ... Rotary wings though Mums the word ...

My Dad still works there on the VC10s, they have one in or out every month or so, and apart from the odd Hawk dropping in with a problem the runway is dead quiet. The army have taken over West Camp so the RAF only use East camp, and for training only.

Odd thing is though the entire runway has just been resurfaced and no one can work out why, as the planned Joint services training facility thats going to be built there has no need for a runway.

Ignored by the BBC - which is why I didn't realise there were so many.

I visited the museum there in 1988 and got a private guided tour.

They used to have quite a collection of WWII as well if memory serves.

We used to go to the perimeter fence to see them (V bombers) lined up. Didn't realise at the time they probably being scrapped. Valiant one wonders?
